Simplicity Peplum Top Pattern 8512

2017 Holiday Apparel Planning!

Every year I have always wanted to purchase or create a special holiday outfit, I think that’s from all the holiday movies and celebrities that I’ve seen. So this year I’ve decided to create a little mini “wardrobe” for this year’s holiday festivities.

As you know from reading my blog over the last year, the Duchess of Cambridge is a huge source of inspiration for my wardrobe and sewing. With that you’ll notice that these outfits are reminiscent of or inspired by her outfits. I’ve decided to make outfits for every holiday from Halloween to New Years, I may decide to make a Valentine’s day dress down the road but we will save that for another day.

Halloween

This Halloween I am participating in a masquerade cocktail party for a local museum. The event dress code is black and white cocktail attire and with living in southeast Texas I know for a fact that it will be still extremely warm Halloween weekend and that I needed a lightweight dress. I just happened to have the perfect material for this event.

This dress is going to be based off a McCall’s pattern but I wanted to change it up a bit by adding a waistband structure.

After designing a draping of this dress I realized that it has a similar look to that of the dress that the Duchess wore in Australia for the play date with George only without the details on the hem.

Thanksgiving

Each year my dad and I cook the Thanksgiving feast so it is very important for me to be able to move around the kitchen and roll up my sleeves. Even though, I am a full lover of a well-constructed dress I just don’t wear dresses on a daily bases. For this holiday it is key for me to wear separates.

The pieces I decided on are a pleated top and black skinny jeans. Just recently I popped into an LK Bennett shop while on holiday in Las Vegas and completely fell in love with a $200 top. I told myself no way could I afford that top but in brain storming this post I thought I could use it as an inspiration for my Thanksgiving outfit. I have also loved the cream and white colored, pleated, tops that the Duchess has worn for a number of business casual occasions so we will take inspiration from both sources and create a one of a kind top.

Jeans are the perfect way to complete this holiday look, in my opinion, because there will be a lot of picking things up off the ground and reaching for things on the high shelves, you’ve got to be ready to move when cooking the grand feast. I’ve always enjoyed how classy the duchess can make a pair of great jeans look and I’m going to attempt to do the exact same using the Ginger Jeans pattern from Closet Case Files.

Christmas

Ever since I saw the Duchess step out in her first coatdress I have always wanted to make one for myself. Unfortunately living in southeast Texas we are not blessed with cold weather down here, even on Christmas day. The first Christmas spent in Texas it was a humid 85 degrees out, not really the weather I associate with Christmas. Thankfully this year it is my turn to travel to my in-laws and we have chosen Michigan this year. I’m so excited for cooler weather!

For this occasion I am going to attempt at making my first coat dress, which is inspired from the coat worn to the 2015 Christmas service.

I will also be making a matching green dress that is a mash up of so many different dresses. Emily Hallmann, from Emily Hallman Design blog, originally inspired this dress. The top will be from McCall’s Butterick B5878 with an added waistband and a circle skirt.

New Years

My final holiday that I always struggle with finding something to wear is New Years. I came across Simplicity 8512 (shown below) and was reminded of the blue dress that was worn by the duchess to the pre-tour reception at Kensington Palace in April 2016. Turning the dress into a fun top is a perfect way to have a fun and simple new year’s outfit.

Depending on how much time there is available to me I’d also like to make a second pair of jeans in black denim. We shall see how everything comes together with all the other projects that I have listed above.

Materials: Telio Betty Dobby Dot Chiffon Navy; Telio Morocco Blues Stretch Poplin Solid Navy; Black denim (to be decided)

I will have posts about these outfits coming soon! Just hemming my Halloween Dress and altering the dress for Christmas.
